An inaugural general meeting of a new cycling club was held in January 1969 to be formed by the merger of the Mercury Road Club, Royal Oak Road Club and the Saxon Road Club.  Nova CC was decided as the name of the new club and their colours purple and yellow. Club officials and a committee were appointed and a constitution agreed.

With 64 members in the first year, during the next few years the club prospered and, having inherited many trophies, awards were given to the Long-distance BAR, Short-distance BAR, Junior BAR, Senior and Junior Road Racing Champion, Club 25, 50, 100 and 12 hour champion, Hill Climb, Most Improved Rider, Best Novice and Mountain Time Trial.

The club also promoted an open 2-up time trial, open 10 mile time trial, open 25 mile Ron Vaughan time trial and an open 50 Mercury Challenge  time trial.

Unfortunately numbers started to decline and in 1976 an emergency constitution was agreed involving less officials.  Things failed to improve and in January 1980, as approximately half the members of the Nova CC were also members of the West Manchester CTC, an amendment was passed to the constitution

“That the Nova Cycling Club do combine with the West Manchester Section of the Cyclists’ Touring Club and become the racing offshoot of that section.”

This proposal was adopted unanimously and the Nova CC in its present form was born.  The open 2-up and open 25 mile time trials are still promoted and the club is affiliated to the BC, CTT, M&DTTA and M&DLCA.

The club has won many national awards.  In 1977 Martin Francis, Robert Browning and Ian Ross were 2nd team in the 24 hour championships.  In 1975 and 1979 Mavis Ross was 6th in the Ladies BBAR and in 1977 improved one place to 5th, and in 1978 and 1979 was placed 2nd in the 100 championship.   Judy Glover was 6th in the Ladies BBAR in 1982 and 5th in 1986.

In 1981 Helen Browning, Judy Glover, and Mavis Ross knocked 5.48 off the women’s 15 competition record and later in the year Judy took the individual 15 competition record.

1982 was our best year when Judy, Mavis and Helen won the team awards in the 50 and 100 mile championships and also the BBAR team.  Also in the same year Mavis and Helen took the ladies tandem 10 record with a time of 21.40.  This was later taken off them by no less than Beryl and Denise Burton with a time of 21.25, but it was regained in 1986 by the Nova, Judy and Mavis recording a time of 20.59.  Finally, between 1980 and 1985 Ian and Mavis Ross took 7 tandem competition records at all distances except 24 hours.
